Innovation Africa – Makhandeni Village, Zululand

Solar Water Infrastructure • Community Development

The Challenge: Makhandeni Village’s 4,400 residents relied solely on contaminated open water sources, facing severe waterborne diseases and spending hours daily collecting unsafe water.

Our Impact: This solar-powered system pumps 30,000 litres daily through 10 taps across the village. The 100+ meter borehole, solar panels, elevated towers, and 8km network now provide clean, safe water—transforming health outcomes.

Empowerment: Ten community members (5 women, 5 men) received training and employment, earning certificates of competence. A village committee manages the system with remote monitoring technology.
